Cinco de Mayo is a day widely celebrated in restaurants and bars across the United States, but how much do we know about the historic date itself?

Join us and GECU on Saturday, May 9th to dive into the history of Cinco de Mayo, as well as aspects from the gorgeous Poblano culture specific to the state of where the famous Battle of Puebla took place!

From a folklorico workshop for kids to engaging crafts for the whole family, and tastes of flavors from Puebla and mesmerizing performances that transport us miles away, this event will help us relive and celebrate the people, culture, and resistance that brought upon the big milestone that took place on May 5th, 1862. Craft: Taller de Diseño de Talavera

¡Entra a nuestro taller de talavera! Talavera is a traditional form of ceramic art from Puebla, México and it is often seen at the front of homes with welcoming phrases like "Bienvenidos a nuestra casa". Step into our digital classroom to create and color your own designs inspired by talavera techniques using stencils. Add your own phrase or family name to decorate your own homes!

Craft: Bandanas Históricas

Design your own bandana while learning about the significance of Cinco de Mayo within the Chicano Movement.

Kids Folklórico Dance Workshop

Learn about the traditions of Puebla through Folklorico dance under the guidance of dance instructor Alice Medina during our Cinco de Mayo event. Class is designed for kids ages 6 to 12. Comfortable clothes and shoes are recommended but not necessary. Beginners welcomed!

Dance: Historia, Tradición, Alegria: La Batalla de Puebla

Presented by Ballet Folklórico Paso del Norte

Join Ballet Folklórico Paso del Norte as it takes you on a journey back in time, when French and Mexican troops clashed on May 5th, 1862. Although the French troops outnumbered the Mexican army led by Ignacio Zaragoza, the French were defeated and México victorious. Through regional dance styles and folklore music, learn about how the Battle of Puebla became a symbol of national sovereignty and resistance for the country of México. Directed by Rodolfo Hernandez.

Enjoy a musical performance by Las Hermanas Dianas, including beautiful folk instruments of México. Las Hermanas Dianas are based in Alburquerque, NM and we are beyond excited to welcome them to downtown El Paso for the first time! This will be an experience you will not want to miss.

Featuring Chef Regina Logar

The talented Chef Regina Logar will guide attendees through the delicious tastes and aromas of Puebla gastronomy, including mole poblano and more.

Chef Regina was the runner-up on MasterChef México in 2018, is an ambassador for Pesca con Futuro—a non-profit focused on promoting sustainable fishing and responsible aquaculture in Mexico—and has participated in numerous high-profile culinary festivals and events across the country. She has also collaborated with major brands such as Nike and leading culinary product companies in Mexico. Regina has worked with renowned restaurants and is the founder and director of La Cevichería Pop-Up, through which she promotes responsible seafood consumption.
