Workshop
During this session, Deana (Dee) Ortega will guide you through a recipe and dialogue centered on green pipián as you reflect on your own ancestral food traditions. Dee is an artist, writer, filmmaker, and heritage foodways practitioner. She is an alumnus of La Semilla Food Center’s Agroecology Farming Fellowship and Chihuahuan Desert Cultural Fellowship.
This workshop is part of the Art & Flavor of the Desert Series, held in collaboration between the Mexican American Cultural Center, La Semilla Food Center, and the Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts’ Les Sembrantes Exhibit.

The Fundamentals of Plein Air Painting
Workshop
Led by professional artist-educator Mario Parra, this hands-on class will focus on plein air painting where participants work directly from life in an outdoor setting. Emphasis is placed on observing light, atmosphere, and shifting colors thus fostering a sensitive connection between the artist and environment.
Participants will learn the fundamentals of outdoor painting, develop landscape observation skills and work with spontaneity under changing conditions.

Portraits with Care
Workshop
In this workshop participants will take portraits of one another with a focus on trust and intention. MACC Community Gallery artist, Gaby Velasquez, will share examples from In This Light, which participants can then take photos in a relaxed setting outside using their own personal camera or phone. The group will discuss posed versus in-between moments and how relationships affect the way photos are made.

Learn how composting with worms reduces your household waste all while providing nutrients that go back into the soil, improving soil structure and making it more nutrient-dense for plants to take up.
