MACC Education

The MACC is committed to providing a variety of inclusive, and culturally based arts and cultural activities through our dynamic classroom facilities. The MACC Education and Curatorial team presents a range of programming to feature traditional arts and crafts workshops, to contemporary expressions and applications of these traditional practices. Key art forms include but are not limited to storytelling, painting, printmaking, textile arts, culinary, dance, theatre, and design. Together with local, Mexican American artists, makers and culture bearers, the MACC is a space for learning, creativity, innovation and accessibility.

Our educational programing is designed to engage our community by celebrating and preserving Mexican American arts, culture and history.

Latin Dance Made Easier with Dance Instructor Eduardo Portillo

In this 5-week series you will learn the five most important principles that all good dancers have: Timing, Connection, Redirection, Leading and Following, and Turn Preparation using easy to learn dance patterns from Salsa, Bachata, Cha-cha-cha and Merengue. Whether you’re new to dancing or aiming to enhance your Latin dance skills, this class is your gateway to dancing smoothly and with confidence.

El Árbol de la Primavera with artist Soila Hernandez

Memorialize this Spring season through the prehispanic clay craft.

Originated in Puebla Mexico, the art of El Árbol de la Primavera is a ceramic process that reflects on the season of Spring and all its meanings recalling all the way back to the prehispanic origin of the craft. Talavera Art with artist Valeria Tejada

Inspired by 5 de Mayo, we are taking a closer look at the cultural heritage of Puebla. Participants will learn about the ceramic process of Talavera pottery and paint on three premade ceramic tiles.

Learn the fundamentals of Salsa and Bachata with seasoned Latin dance instructor, Eduardo Portillo. Tailored for beginner and intermediate dancers, this 4-part class series teaches step-by-step Salsa and Bachata, offering easy-to-follow techniques for leading and following. Whether you're new to or aiming to enhance your Salsa/Bachata skills, this class is your gateway to dancing with confidence on the dance floor.

Repujado: Metal Embossing

This beginner class led by artist Maria Almeida Natividad will introduce participants to the method of
Repujado, a traditional art form brought to Mexico from Spain that entails of embossing onto metal in
order to create decorative designs

Retablo Making

Paint your own retablo with artist Soila Hernandez.
Join us for a hands-on workshop where you'll explore the rich tradition of retablo making—a vibrant form of folk art with deep roots in our culture. Guided by experienced instructor, Soila Hernandez, you'll learn about the history and symbolism behind retablos, then create your own using paint, and personal inspiration.
Whether you’re honoring a memory, telling a story, or simply exploring a new creative outlet, this workshop offers a meaningful space for expression through art.

Tiny Clay Frames

Join artist Omar Hernandez for a hands-on workshop where you’ll craft your own miniature picture frames from polymer clay. You’ll get to hand-mold, paint, and personalize a tiny frame perfect for displaying a cherished memory. We’ll even print a mini photo for you on-site! All materials provided, just bring your creativity!

Ancestral Tortillas: From Nixtamal to Maseca

Learn to cook with James Beard nominated chef, Mateo Herrera. Join us for an immersive cooking class, where the ancient art of tortilla-making is honored and practiced with care. Guided by Chef Mateo and his passion for ancestral foods, this single, two-hour workshop will allow participants to explore two paths of tortilla preparation: the ancestral method using nixtamal and the modern, time-saving option using Maseca.

Guisados Cooking Workshop

Learn to cook with James Beard nominated & Food Network featured chef, Enrique Lozano. Join us for an enriching and hands-on cooking class where we will explore the rich culinary traditions of classic Mexican guisados. In this class, you will learn how to prepare ingredients and build layers of flavor, transforming them into a rich, savory guisado/stew that can be used in an array of Mexican dishes. Each workshop will cover two guisados in the designated two-hour window.
